Aciphex Sprinkle and Breastfeeding

Studies have shown that the active ingredient in Aciphex Sprinkle (rabeprazole sprinkle) does pass through breast milk in rats. Although it is unknown if the drug passes through breast milk in women, it is thought that it would to some extent. Due to the potential risks of using Aciphex Sprinkle while breastfeeding, woman may want to avoid this drug while nursing.

 

Can Breastfeeding Women Take Aciphex Sprinkle?

At this time, it is not known if Aciphex® Sprinkle™ (rabeprazole sprinkle) passes through breast milk in humans. The manufacturer of the medication recommends it be used with caution in women who are breastfeeding.

No studies have been done to see if Aciphex Sprinkle passes through breast milk in humans. However, the drug has been shown to pass through the breast milk in rats. In these studies, the levels of the drug in the breast milk were significantly higher than the levels of the drug in the mother's bloodstream. Based on the properties of Aciphex Sprinkle, it is expected to pass through human breast milk to some extent.
 
In animal studies, rabeprazole (the active ingredient in Aciphex Sprinkle) reduced weight gain in newborn rats and rabbits when given in very high doses to the mothers during late pregnancy and while breastfeeding. It has also increased the risk for stomach cancer when given to rats. It is not entirely known whether these risks apply to humans as well.
 
Until more information is available on Aciphex Sprinkle and breastfeeding, it is probably safest to avoid using the medication while nursing, especially when nursing a newborn or premature infant. If your healthcare provider recommends Aciphex Sprinkle while you are breastfeeding, make sure to watch for any possible side effects or problems in your child.
 
While Aciphex Sprinkle is approved for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in children age 1 to 11 years old, it could feasibly be used off-label in adults. Therefore, information about using this drug while breastfeeding may be relevant to some individuals.
