Axid Sexual Side Effects: An Overview
As with all medicines,
Axid® (
nizatidine) has possible side effects. In clinical studies conducted prior to the approval of Axid, a few sexual side effects were reported. These sexual side effects include:
Axid and Sex Drive
In previous clinical studies, a decreased sex drive (also known as libido) was reported in people taking Axid. However, a similar percentage of people not taking Axid also reported a decreased sex drive. Therefore, it seems unlikely that Axid will cause a decrease in sex drive.
Axid and Impotence
Impotence is usually defined as a total inability to achieve an erection, an inconsistent ability to do so, or a tendency to sustain only brief erections. Ultimately, impotence is the repeated inability to get or keep an erection firm enough for sexual intercourse. Impotence is also known as erectile dysfunction (or ED for short).
Although there were reports of impotence in men taking Axid, a similar percentage of men not taking Axid also reported impotence. It appears unlikely that Axid is a cause of impotence.
Axid, Sexual Side Effects, and Suggestions
It is impossible for your healthcare provider to know beforehand whether you will develop any sexual side effects while taking Axid.
Also, if a person does develop sexual side effects, such as impotence or a decrease in sex drive (libido), it is difficult to know whether these problems are caused by another condition or Axid itself.
However, if you develop any Axid sexual side effects, make sure to talk with your healthcare provider. There is treatment that he or she may be able to recommend, such as an
erectile dysfunction medication. Depending on how severe your sexual side effects are, he or she may also recommend that you adjust your
Axid dosage or try another medicine to treat your condition.
