Over-the-counter cimetidine is approved for sour stomach, acid indigestion, and heartburn in children 12 years old and older. Prescription cimetidine is not recommended for children under the age of 16. Talk to your healthcare provider about the benefits and risks of using cimetidine in children and adolescents.
Is Cimetidine Used "Off-Label"?
On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend cimetidine for something other than the conditions discussed above. This is called an "off-label" use. At this time, there are a few off-label cimetidine uses, such as:
Preventing ulcers in people in an intensive care unit (ICU) of a hospital (this use is also known as "stress ulcer prophylaxis")
Preventing acid-related pneumonia during surgeries
