Curcumin and Pregnancy

The full risks of consuming curcumin during pregnancy are not known. Although eating foods with curcumin is probably safe, it is a good idea to avoid curcumin supplements during pregnancy. Also, just because it is a "natural" product, this does not automatically mean that it is safe during pregnancy. Curcumin may stimulate the uterus, possibly resulting in a miscarriage.

Is Curcumin Safe During Pregnancy?

At this time, it is not known if curcumin is safe for use in pregnancy. Curcumin is the main, medicinally active compound in turmeric (a spice often used in Indian cuisine).
 
There is no evidence to suggest that curcumin is either safe or unsafe for pregnant women. Even though curcumin is a "natural" product, it does not automatically mean that it is safe for use during pregnancy (after all, many poisons and toxins are also natural). Until more information is available, it may be a good idea to avoid curcumin if you are pregnant or thinking about becoming pregnant. While eating foods with turmeric is assumed to be safe during pregnancy, using turmeric or curcumin medicinally may cause problems. There is some concern that medicinal use of such products could stimulate the uterus, possibly leading to a miscarriage, although there is not much evidence to support this claim.
 
Pregnancy is not a time to be experimenting with herbs or medications. It is best to stick with products that are known to be safe for pregnant women. As a dietary supplement that has been studied only a little, curcumin is not one of these products.

If you are pregnant, it is always a good idea to have a discussion with your healthcare provider before taking any medication or supplement, including curcumin. Do not assume that curcumin is automatically safe for use in pregnancy just because it is a natural product.
