Cytotec Indications

The approved indication for Cytotec® (misoprostol) includes the prevention of stomach ulcers (gastric ulcers) in adults who are taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Specifically, this drug is approved for use in people who are at risk for developing serious complications from ulcers or who have a history of an ulcer.

There are also several "off-label" Cytotec indications, such as:

  • Causing an abortion
  • Inducing labor
  • Treating chronic constipation.

Cytotec is a type of prostaglandin, a hormone-like substance found naturally in the body. It works by protecting the lining of the stomach and decreasing stomach acid secretion.
