Unlabeled Uses of Cytotec

Cytotec® (misoprostol) is approved to help prevent stomach ulcers (gastric ulcers) in adults who are taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). This prescription medicine is specifically designed for people who are at risk for developing serious complications from ulcers or who have a history of an ulcer.

However, there are also times when a healthcare provider may prescribe Cytotec for unlabeled ("off-label") uses, which are unapproved uses for the drug. There are several possible unlabeled uses for Cytotec, such as:

  • Causing an abortion
  • Inducing labor
  • Treating chronic constipation.
