Drug Interactions With Famotidine
When certain medications are taken together, there is a potential for negative drug interactions. Famotidine interactions can potentially occur when the drug is taken along with atazanavir, ketoconazole, or itraconazole, among other medications. Drug interactions with famotidine can decrease the absorption of these drugs into the body, which may make them less effective.
Famotidine (Pepcid®) can potentially interact with a few other medicines. Some of the medicines that may lead to negative drug interactions with famotidine include:
- Atazanavir (Reyataz®)
- Itraconazole (Sporanox®)
- Ketoconazole (Nizoral®).
The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur when famotidine is combined with any of the drugs listed above.
Atazanavir
Taking famotidine with atazanavir can decrease the absorption of atazanavir into the body, perhaps making it less effective. If you are taking these drugs together, your healthcare provider may need to increase your dose of atazanavir or may suggest an alternative to famotidine.
Itraconazole
Combining famotidine with itraconazole can decrease the absorption of itraconazole into the body, which may make it less effective. To prevent this, your healthcare provider may need to increase your dose of itraconazole or may suggest an alternative to famotidine.
Ketoconazole
Taking famotidine along with ketoconazole can decrease the absorption of ketoconazole into the body, perhaps making it less effective. If you are taking these drugs together, your healthcare provider may -- depending on your particular situation -- need to increase your dose of ketoconazole or may suggest a substitution for famotidine.
