Famotidine Alternatives

Other Medications
Several types of medications can be considered substitutes for famotidine. A few of the more common types include:

Antacids and foaming agents: These medications can be helpful at treating symptoms of GERD or heartburn, but they are usually not enough when treating more serious problems affecting the esophagus. Some medications in this category include:

  • Alka-Seltzer®
  • Maalox®
  • Mylanta®
  • Pepto-Bismol®
  • Rolaids®
  • Riopan®.

H2 blocker medications: Famotidine is an H2 blocker. H2 blockers work by reducing the amount of acid produced by the stomach, and they work relatively quickly. In addition to famotidine, medications in this category can include:

Proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs): These are some of the most effective medications for the treatment of GERD and related conditions. However, they usually take longer to work than other antacids or H2 blockers. Some examples of PPIs include:

Surgery
If your condition is very serious, or if medications are not helping, surgery may be another option (see GERD Surgery for more information).
