What Is Famotidine Used For?

Is Famotidine Used for Children and Adolescents?

Over-the-counter famotidine is approved for the treatment of sour stomach, acid indigestion, and heartburn in children ages 12 and over. Prescription famotidine is approved to treat GERD in infants (even newborns) and children, and is approved to treat ulcers in children as young as one year old.

Is Famotidine Used for Off-Label Reasons?

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend famotidine for something other than the conditions discussed in this article. This is called an "off-label" use. At this time, there are a few off-label famotidine uses, such as:

  • Preventing ulcers in people in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a hospital (this use is also known as "stress ulcer prophylaxis")
  • Preventing acid-related pneumonia during surgeries
  • Treating H. pylori infections.
