You can currently buy generic versions of both prescription and over-the-counter Pepcid. In fact, there is only one Pepcid product that is not available in generic form. The generic versions are made by several companies, including Major Pharmaceuticals and Watson Pharmaceuticals.

Can I Buy Generic Pepcid?

Pepcid® (famotidine) is a medication that has been licensed to treat several conditions affecting the esophagus, stomach, and intestines. It is part of a class of drugs known as H2 blockers. Pepcid is available both over-the-counter (OTC) and by prescription.
Prescription-strength Pepcid tablets are made by Merck and Company, and prescription Pepcid liquid (oral suspension) is made by Salix Pharmaceuticals. Over-the-counter Pepcid AC® and Pepcid Complete® are made by Johnson & Johnson. Generic prescription-strength Pepcid tablets and oral suspension are currently available, as are over-the-counter generic Pepcid AC and Pepcid Complete.
At this time, Maximum Strength Pepcid EZ Chews chewable tablets are not available in generic form.

Available Strengths

Generic prescription Pepcid is available in the following strengths:
  • Famotidine 20 mg tablets
  • Famotidine 40 mg tablets
  • Famotidine 40 mg per mL for oral suspension (liquid). 


Generic over-the-counter Pepcid is available in 10 mg and 20 mg tablets, and is sold under the following names:
  • Famotidine tablets
  • Acid Reducer tablets
  • Heartburn Relief tablets.
Generic over-the-counter Pepcid Complete is sold under various store brands and various names, such as Famotidine Complete or Acid Controller Complete.
