GERD Home > Generic Prevacid 24HR

You can now buy Prevacid 24HR (lansoprazole) in generic form. The generic versions are made by various manufacturers and -- like the brand-name drug -- are available in one strength only.

Can I Buy Generic Prevacid 24HR?

Prevacid® 24HR (lansoprazole) is a nonprescription medication approved for the short-term treatment of frequent heartburn. Prevacid 24HR is one of a group of medications known as proton pump inhibitors, or PPIs for short. Although Prevacid was originally available by prescription only, it is now available both with a prescription -- sold as Prevacid -- or over-the-counter (OTC) -- sold as Prevacid 24 HR.

Brand-name Prevacid 24HR is made by Novartis Consumer Health, Inc. However, the exclusivity rights for this product have expired, and Prevacid 24HR is now available in generic form as well.

Availability of Generic Prevacid 24HR

Although the prescription version of Prevacid has been available in generic form since 2009, Prevacid 24HR was protected from generic competition until May 2012. In May 2012, the first generic versions of this medication began appearing on store shelves. Like the brand-name version, the generics come in just one strength (lansoprazole 15 mg capsules).

The generic versions (usually sold as "store brands" under various names) are made by a few different manufacturers, such as:

  • Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Ltd.
  • Perrigo
  • Wockhardt Limited.

Affording This Medication

The fact that this medication has "gone over-the-counter" and "gone generic" should significantly decrease the cost, at least compared to the price of the prescription brand-name version. For many people, the most affordable option will be to purchase the generic over-the-counter version. However, sometimes insurance will cover the prescription version (although very often they won't), in which case the prescription version might be less expensive.

Your pharmacist can help you sort through these options to help you find the most affordable option for your situation.
