GERD Home > Prilosec Substitute
Prilosec® (omeprazole) is a medication used for treating several conditions related to the esophagus, stomach, and intestines. These conditions include ulcers, GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), heartburn, and other similar conditions. Although Prilosec can be effective in treating these conditions, for some people it does not work, or side effects may occur. Fortunately, there are several substitutes for Prilosec. Some of these substitutes include:
- Diet or other lifestyle changes
- Other medications
Changes in diet may help to relieve symptoms, especially for mild heartburn or GERD. While a GERD diet may help with less serious conditions, diet alone is usually not enough for more serious conditions. Some medications that may be used as Prilosec substitutes include antacids, H2 blocker medications, and other proton pump inhibitors. If your condition is very serious or if medications are not helping, surgery may be another option.
If Prilosec is not working for you or if it is causing bothersome side effects, ask your healthcare provider about trying a substitute.
