Does Neem Really Work?

Neem is a tree often used in holistic medicine and other types of natural medicine. You may have heard claims that neem works wonders for a variety of different medical problems. Does neem really work, though? This article will address some of the questions you may have about the effectiveness of neem for various uses.

Neem Studies in Humans

Neem has been studied very little in humans. Many of the claims that neem really works are based on traditional uses, personal experience, or animal or other laboratory studies.
A few studies show promise for some of neem's uses. One study suggested that applying a neem leaf gel to the teeth and gums may reduce the formation of dental plaque and might help decrease certain bacteria that contribute to plaque formation. Another study suggested that taking a neem bark extract by mouth might help heal stomach or intestinal ulcers. However, much more research is necessary before it can be known for sure if neem really works for these uses.

Does Neem Work for Other Uses?

It is not clear if neem is effective for most other uses. It is important to understand that results of animal studies (or "test tube" studies) cannot necessarily be applied to humans. Even if early animal or test tube studies suggest that neem might be effective for certain uses, it should not be assumed that humans will react to neem in a similar way.
