Specific Safety Concerns With Neem

Specific Neem Safety Warnings and Precautions

Warnings and precautions to be aware of concerning the safety of neem include the following:

  • There have been reports of serious, sometimes fatal neem side effects in children. Until more information is available, it is probably best to avoid giving neem to children.

  • Neem may lower blood sugar, which might cause dangerously low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) if you also take diabetes medications. If you have diabetes, check with your healthcare provider before taking neem (see Neem Drug Interactions for more information about this and other potential interactions).

  • Because neem may have contraceptive effects (in both men and women), couples trying to conceive should avoid taking it.

  • As dietary supplements, neem supplements are not as closely regulated as prescription (or non-prescription) drugs. They can be marketed without any proof that they are either safe or effective. Do not assume that just because a product is sold or advertised in the United States that it is safe or effective (or even that it contains the right ingredients in the right amounts).

  • It is possible that neem might worsen autoimmune diseases by stimulating the immune system. If your autoimmune disease worsens, you should stop taking neem. If you have a severe or life-threatening autoimmune disease, it is probably best to avoid taking neem altogether.

  • If you have had an organ transplant, it is probably best to avoid neem, as neem could stimulate the immune system and increase the risk of organ rejection.

  • It is not known if neem is safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women (see Neem and Pregnancy and Neem and Breastfeeding).
