Prevacid Over-the-Counter

Prevacid® 24HR (lansoprazole) is a medication used for the temporary treatment of frequent heartburn; it is the over-the-counter (OTC) version of Prevacid. Although the prescription version of Prevacid is approved for a variety of uses, this over-the-counter product is licensed for heartburn treatment only. Prevacid 24HR comes in the form of a capsule and is taken once a day (in the morning, before eating).

This nonprescription medication is recommended only for a 14-day course of treatment (repeating once every four months, if necessary). In some cases, however, your healthcare provider may recommend using it more frequently. As with any medication, side effects are possible. Diarrhea, nausea, and constipation are some of the most common ones; however, most people tolerate it well.
