Prilosec OTC

Prilosec OTC is an over-the-counter medication that is used to treat frequent heartburn in adults. Belonging to a class of medications known as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), Prilosec OTC reduces the amount of acid in the stomach by blocking certain acid production sites. The medication comes in the form of a tablet that is usually taken once a day. Prilosec OTC can take one to four days to start working and is not designed for rapid heartburn relief. Some of the more common side effects of Prilosec OTC include upper respiratory infections, abdominal pain, and headaches.

 

What Is Prilosec OTC?

Prilosec OTC® (omeprazole magnesium) is an over-the-counter medication used to treat frequent heartburn (occurring at least twice a week) in adults.

How Does Prilosec OTC Work?

Prilosec OTC is part of a group of medications called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). The stomach contains tiny pumps (called proton pumps) that produce acid. Prilosec OTC works by binding to these proton pumps, stopping the production of acid. Prilosec is very effective at decreasing acid production.
 

When and How to Take Prilosec OTC

Some general considerations for when and how to take Prilosec OTC include:
 
 
  • Prilosec OTC comes in a tablet form. It is usually taken by mouth once a day.
     
  • Prilosec OTC is not intended for rapid heartburn relief, as it can take one to four days for it to start working.
     
  • Prilosec OTC has a special coating that prevents stomach acid from destroying the medication. Do not break, crush, or chew Prilosec OTC tablets.
     
  • For Prilosec OTC to work properly, it must be taken as prescribed. Prilosec OTC will not work if you stop taking it.
     

Prilosec OTC Dosing

There is just one dose of Prilosec OTC recommended by the manufacturer (Prilosec OTC 20 mg once daily). However, your healthcare provider may recommend a different dose, depending on a number of factors, including:
 
  • Your age
  • The medical condition being treated
  • Other medical conditions you may have
  • Other medications you may currently be taking.
     
As with any medication, do not take more Prilosec OTC than recommended unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.

Side Effects of Prilosec OTC

As with any medicine, there are possible side effects with Prilosec OTC. However, not everyone who takes Prilosec OTC will experience side effects. In fact, most people tolerate the medication well. When Prilosec OTC side effects do occur, in most cases they are minor and either require no treatment or can easily be treated by you or your healthcare provider. Serious side effects are less common.
 
Based on studies of prescription Prilosec, the most common side effects of Prilosec OTC can include:
 
  • Headaches
  • Abdominal pain (or stomach pain)
  • Upper respiratory infections, such as the common cold.

Drug Interactions With Prilosec OTC

Prilosec OTC: What Should I Tell My Healthcare Provider?

You should talk with your healthcare provider before taking Prilosec OTC if you have:
 
  • Any signs of bleeding in the digestive tract, such as blood in the stool, unusually dark stool, or vomiting blood
  • Have had heartburn for over three months (as this may be a sign of more serious conditions)
  • Have heartburn with lightheadedness, sweating, or dizziness
  • Chest pain, shoulder pain, shortness of breath, or other signs of a heart attack
  • Wheezing, especially with heartburn
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Abdominal pain (stomach pain)
  • Liver disease.
     
Also, let your healthcare provider know if you are:
 
Tell your healthcare provider about all of the medicines you currently take, including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.

Alternatives to Prilosec OTC

For most people, Prilosec OTC is quite effective at treating GERD, ulcers, or other digestive problems. It is also generally well tolerated. However, Prilosec OTC side effects can occur or the medicine may not work as well as needed. In these cases, your healthcare provider may recommend an alternative to Prilosec OTC. Overdose With Prilosec OTC

People who take too much Prilosec OTC may have overdose symptoms that could include:
 
  • Confusion
  • Drowsiness
  • Blurred vision
  • A rapid heart rate (tachycardia)
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Sweating and flushing
  • Headaches
  • Dry mouth.

Prilosec OTC Storage Methods

Prilosec OTC should be stored at room temperature, away from moisture or heat. Prilosec OTC tablets should be kept in an airtight container.

Prilosec OTC: What Should I Do If I Miss a Dose?

If you do not take your Prilosec OTC as scheduled, take your missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose of Prilosec OTC.
 

Prilosec OTC Strengths

Over-the-counter Prilosec OTC is available in one strength -- Prilosec OTC 20 mg tablets.
 

Generic Prilosec OTC

There is currently no generic Prilosec OTC licensed for sale. There are, however, very similar (but not identical) generic omeprazole OTC products currently available.
