Products That Can React With Protonix

Atazanavir
Taking atazanavir with medications like Protonix can significantly decrease the level of atazanavir in your blood, perhaps making it less effective. These drugs should not be taken together.

Clopidogrel (Plavix)
Some research suggests that proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), like Protonix, may decrease the effectiveness of clopidogrel. This could be a serious drug interaction. However, experts are still in disagreement about how significant this interaction really is and whether it affects all PPIs. To be safe, do not combine these medications without discussing it with your healthcare provider first.

Digoxin
Protonix may cause low blood magnesium levels, which can lead to serious arrhythmias (irregular heart rhythms), especially in people taking digoxin. Your healthcare provider may decide to monitor magnesium levels periodically if you are taking digoxin and Protonix.

Certain Diuretics
Protonix can cause low blood magnesium (hypomagnesemia). Because certain diuretics can also cause this problem, combining Protonix with one of these diuretics could cause severely low blood magnesium levels, which may lead to serious side effects such as muscle spasms, irregular heart rhythms, or seizures. Your healthcare provider may decide to monitor your magnesium levels periodically if you are taking Protonix with one of these diuretics.

Iron Salts
If you are taking both Protonix and iron salts, your body may metabolize them differently than intended. Your healthcare provider may choose to monitor your progress more closely in this case.

Ampicillin Esters
If you are taking both Protonix and ampicillin, your body may metabolize them differently than intended. Your healthcare provider may choose to monitor your progress more closely in this case.
