Protonix Drug Interactions

For people taking Protonix, drug interactions may occur involving such medications as iron salts, ampicillin esters, and ketoconazole. Other potential drug interactions with Protonix may occur when taking the medication with warfarin.

Protonix Drug Interactions: An Introduction

Protonix® (pantoprazole sodium) potentially has a number of medicines that it can interact with, which include:

  • Atazanavir (Reyataz®)
  • Iron salts
  • Ampicillin esters (bacampicillin, pivampicillin)
  • Ketoconazole (Nizoral®)
  • Warfarin (Coumadin®, Jantoven®).

Atazanavir
Taking atazanavir with medications like Protonix can significantly decrease the level of atazanavir in your blood, perhaps making it less effective. It is not recommended to take these medications together.

Iron Salts
If you are taking both Protonix and iron salts, your body may metabolize them differently than intended. Your healthcare provider may choose to monitor your progress closely.

Ampicillin Esters
If you are taking both Protonix and ampicillin, your body may metabolize them differently than intended. Your healthcare provider may choose to monitor your progress closely.

Ketoconazole
If you are taking both Protonix and ketoconazole, your body may metabolize them differently than intended. Your healthcare provider may choose to monitor your progress closely.
