Protonix for Acid Reflux
Protonix® (pantoprazole sodium) is a prescription drug licensed to treat various conditions related to the esophagus, stomach, and intestines. While acid reflux treatment is the most common use of Protonix, the medication is also approved for the treatment of erosive esophagitis and pathological hypersecretory conditions.
As a proton pump inhibitor, Protonix works by decreasing the amount of acid in your stomach by blocking the acid production sites. This action can help relieve heartburn and other GERD symptoms. A decrease in the amount of stomach acid will also give the esophagus, the stomach, and the intestines time to heal.
Before using Protonix, you should talk to your healthcare provider if you have liver disease or liver failure, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have any allergies.
