Protonix Medication for GERD

Healthcare providers often prescribe Protonix® (pantoprazole sodium) for the treatment of various conditions affecting the esophagus, stomach, and intestines. Besides using the medication for GERD, Protonix can also be used to treat erosive esophagitis and pathological hypersecretory conditions.

By blocking acid production sites in the stomach to decrease stomach acid, the medicine can help relieve heartburn and other GERD symptoms. A decrease in the amount of acid in the stomach can also give the esophagus, the stomach, and the intestines time to heal.

While most people tolerate Protonix well, side effects are possible. Some of the most common side effects that have been reported in people taking this drug include abdominal pain, insomnia, headaches, and nausea.
