Protonix Side Effects: An Introduction
As with any medicine, there are possible side effects associated with
Protonix® (
pantoprazole sodium). Not everyone who takes Protonix will experience Protonix side effects. In most cases, Protonix side effects are minor, which means that they require no treatment or are easily treated by your healthcare provider.

Common Protonix Side Effects
Protonix has been studied extensively in clinical trials, with over 11,000 people worldwide having been evaluated.
In these studies, side effects are always documented. The most common side effects of Protonix were:
- Headache
- Diarrhea
- Nausea
- Flatulence
- Abdominal pain
- Insomnia
- Rash
- Burping
- High blood sugar levels (hyperglycemia)
- Vomiting
- Abnormal liver function tests.
Other Protonix Side Effects
There are other possible
Protonix side effects that can occur. In previous clinical studies, these side effects occurred in more than 1 percent of patients.
Some of these possible Protonix side effects include, but are not limited to:
- Anxiety
- Pain in a joint (arthralgia)
- Lack of strength and energy (asthenia)
- Back pain
- Bronchitis
- Chest pain
- Constipation
- Increased cough
- Dizziness
- Indigestion (dyspepsia)
- Flu syndrome
- Gastroenteritis
- High fat levels in the blood (hyperlipidemia)
- Migraine
- Neck pain
- Sore throat (pharyngitis)
- Irritation and inflammation of the nasal passages (rhinitis)
- Respiratory tract infection
- Urinary tract infection (UTI).
Rare Protonix Side Effects
There are other possible Protonix side effects that can occur. These rare side effects occur in less than 1 percent of patients. For these side effects, it is difficult to tell whether the side effect is because of the medication or something else.
