Tagamet Uses (Cont.)

Tagamet Use in Children and Adolescents

Over-the-counter Tagamet HB is approved for sour stomach, acid indigestion, and heartburn in children 12 years old and older. Prescription Tagamet is not recommended for children under the age of 16. Talk to your healthcare provider about the benefits and risks of using Tagamet in children and adolescents.

Off-Label Tagamet Uses

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend Tagamet for something other than the conditions discussed above. This is called an "off-label" use. At this time, there are a few off-label Tagamet uses, such as:

  • Preventing ulcers in people in an intensive care unit (ICU) of a hospital (this use is also known as "stress ulcer prophylaxis")
  • Preventing acid-related pneumonia during surgeries
  • Treating H. pylori infections
  • Treating warts
  • Treating molluscum contagiosum.
