Generic Zantac

Like the brand-name medicine, generic Zantac is available as a prescription drug and as an over-the-counter medication. The generic version of prescription Zantac is available as 150 mg and 300 mg tablets. Over-the-counter generic Zantac is available in a 75 mg strength. Certain forms of Zantac are not yet available as generics, including Zantac syrup, Zantac EFFERdose tablets, and over-the-counter Zantac 150 mg tablets.

Generic for Zantac: An Overview

Zantac® (ranitidine hydrochloride) is a medication that has been licensed to treat several conditions of the esophagus, stomach, and intestines. It is part of a class of drugs known as H2 blockers. Zantac is available both over-the-counter and by prescription.
 
Prescription Zantac was originally manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline. Over-the-counter Zantac was first made by Pfizer Consumer Healthcare. Both versions are off patent and currently available as generics.
 

Generic Zantac Strengths

For prescription generic Zantac, the following strengths are available:
 
  • Ranitidine 150 mg tablets
  • Ranitidine 300 mg tablets.
     
Generic versions of Zantac syrup and Zantac EFFERdose® tablets are not available. They will not be available until at least 2009, when their first patents expire.
 
For over-the-counter generic Zantac, only ranitidine 75 mg tablets are available. Over-the-counter generic Zantac 150 mg will not be available until at least August 2007, when its first patent expires.
