Substitute for Zantac

There are a number of other medications that can be used as a substitute for Zantac. Depending on the severity of the condition involved, medications such as antacids, H2 blocker medications, or proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs) may be used in place of Zantac. In some cases, a substitute for Zantac may take the form of lifestyle changes or (in very serious cases) surgery.

Substitute for Zantac: An Overview

Zantac® (ranitidine hydrochloride) is a medication used for treating several conditions related to the esophagus, stomach, and intestines. These conditions include ulcers, GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), erosive esophagitis, and heartburn. Although Zantac can be effective in treating these conditions, it does not work for everyone. Also, the medication may cause bothersome side effects. Fortunately, there are several substitutes for Zantac. Some of these Zantac substitutes include:

  • Changes to diet (or other lifestyle changes)
  • Other medications
  • Surgery.

Dietary Changes
Especially for mild heartburn or GERD, changes in diet may help to relieve symptoms.
While a GERD diet may help with more serious conditions, it is usually not enough to treat more serious conditions (see GERD Diet).
