Zantac
® (
ranitidine hydrochloride) is a prescription drug approved for the treatment of certain conditions related to the esophagus, stomach, and intestines (including
GERD, erosive esophagitis, and ulcers). A non-prescription form of the medication is also licensed to treat
heartburn, acid indigestion, and sour stomach.
Zantac syrup, tablets, and EFFERdose
® tablets (which are dissolved in water) are available by prescription. Over-the-counter versions are sold under the names Zantac 75 Acid Reducer and Maximum Strength
Zantac 150 Acid Reducer. Both Zantac syrup and tablets are taken one to four times a day, depending on the particular product and condition being treated.
While most people tolerate Zantac well, side effects are possible. Some of the most common side effects that have been reported with this drug include nausea or vomiting,
headaches,
diarrhea, and
constipation.
