The FDA has approved a generic version of Zegerid capsules. The capsules come in two strengths and are sold by Par Pharmaceutical and Prasco Laboratories. It is unclear when generic versions of the other forms of Zegerid will become available.
Can I Buy Generic Zegerid?Zegerid® (omeprazole/sodium bicarbonate) is a prescription medication approved for treating several conditions related to the stomach, intestines, and esophagus. A nonprescription version (Zegerid OTC™) is also available for the short-term treatment of frequent heartburn. Zegerid contains omeprazole (a proton pump inhibitor, or PPI) along with sodium bicarbonate (which allows the omeprazole to be absorbed).

At this time, a generic version of prescription Zegerid capsules is available. The other forms of Zegerid are not yet available in generic form.
Availability of Generic ZegeridCurrently, generic Zegerid capsules (available by prescription only) are available in the following strengths:
- Omeprazole/sodium bicarbonate 20 mg/1100 mg -- 20 mg of omeprazole and 1100 mg of sodium bicarbonate
- Omeprazole/sodium bicarbonate 40 mg/1100 mg -- 40 mg of omeprazole and 1100 mg of sodium bicarbonate.
These products are sold by two different companies: Par Pharmaceutical and Prasco Laboratories. The version sold by Prasco Laboratories is an "authorized generic"; this means that it is exactly the same as the brand-name medicine in every possible way (it is even made by the brand-name manufacturer and looks exactly like the brand-name drug) -- it is just sold in a generic bottle and through a generic company.
