Taking Zegerid for Specific Conditions

Zegerid Dosage for Gastric Ulcers
The recommended dose for stomach ulcers (gastric ulcers) is Zegerid 40 mg once daily for four to eight weeks.

Zegerid Dosage for GERD and Erosive Esophagitis
The recommended dose for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is Zegerid 20 mg once daily for up to four weeks. For people with GERD and erosive esophagitis, the recommended dose is Zegerid 20 mg for four to eight weeks. Zegerid can be continued if needed to prevent erosive esophagitis from returning.

Zegerid Dosage for Stress Ulcer Prophylaxis
The recommended Zegerid dosage for preventing upper gastrointestinal bleeding (from ulcers) in critically ill people (such as people in the intensive care unit) is 40 mg initially, followed by 40 mg in six to eight hours. After this initial dosing, Zegerid 40 mg is taken once daily for 14 days. Only the Zegerid 40 mg powder for oral suspension packets (not the capsule form) is approved for this use.

Zegerid OTC Dosage for Heartburn
The recommended nonprescription Zegerid OTC™ dosage for treating frequent heartburn is one Zegerid OTC 20 mg capsule once daily in the morning, at least one hour before eating.

Zegerid OTC is approved for a 14-day course of treatment, with repeated courses allowed once every four months. However, many (if not most) people who take medications like Zegerid OTC need to take them on a long-term basis. There is no reason that Zegerid OTC cannot be used on a long-term basis, except that an evaluation by a healthcare provider is probably warranted, to rule out the possibility of more serious problems.

If your healthcare provider recommends that you take Zegerid OTC for longer than 14 days, you may completely disregard the label directions that warn against doing so.

The prescription version of Zegerid can be taken during the day or at bedtime, as long as it is taken on an empty stomach at least one hour before a meal. This suggests that you could probably also take Zegerid OTC at bedtime if you desire (instead of in the morning), as long as you take it on an empty stomach.
